“Capture a Fairy” in a Jar at Captured Moments
Altered Art/ Paper Crafting, Classes at the Store, Store News and EventsThe 2nd in a series of class offerings, pretty much unrelated to paper crafting, is one of my passions… Porcelain Dollmaking!
I started making antique reproductions porcelain dolls in 1984 and have continued to keep my hands in this art ever since. One branch of dollmaking that allowed me to be very creative (reproduction dollmaking is very strict as you might imagine) was the “Modern” dollmaking branch. With “modern” dollmaking, basically, anything goes. I fell in love with a number of modern doll molds but I was really crazy about these small, beautifully designed fairies and I have since created hundreds of these playful nimphs!
The possibilities for these fairies are endless and no two can be the same! This class has been scheduled for Saturday, March 31st beginning at 10am and running until 3pm. The class fee is $85 and includes everything you will need. I have set aside the full day allowing as much time as anyone needs. Most likely, the workshop will wrap up earlier than 3pm.
The fairy shown here is not depicted in a Jar. I will post images of our “Captured Fairies” soon. The fairy itself, however is the same fairy used. What this workshop will entail is as follows…
I will demonstrate the process of pouring and casting the porcelain, cleaning and firing, and painting and firing. You will have a hands-on opportunity to “play” during this demo so you can see what is involved from start to finish. The porcelain fairies for class will be pre-poured, cleaned, fired and painted. You will have a choice of fairy poses/positions when creating your project. The decision for me to do the porcelain work for this class myself, is based on the fact that it would have caused this project to span over 4 class sessions, and probably a lot of frustration to go along with them!
During the workshop, you will have so much to do and it’s all really fun! First, you will assemble your fairy and clothe her. We do this with beautiful paper flowers from Prima Marketing and Kaisercraft. We will also use silk ribbon, feathers, paper leaves and whatever else we can conger up!
Next, you will giver her hair and feathers. We have beautifully dyed mohair in all colors, including fun purples and pinks. It’s fun to add a highlight of color to a blonde or brunette fairy. The wings are a special printed acrylic design that uses actual butterfly and moth wing imprints. These are then embellished with gems, glitter and sometimes, I burn the edges giving them a really unique finish.
Once are fairies are assembled, dressed, wigged and winged, we set up their jar arrangement adding driftwood, mushrooms, acorns, etc to their surroundings. Their setting can be whatever you choose… woodsy, beachy, mystical, endless possibilities. We will have bins and bins of supplies that you can pull from to create the Jar setting.
As we get closer to this workshop date, I will let participants know what they need to be thinking about and preparing for. I am very excited to be offering this unique opportunity, it should be a fun day!
